This gorgeous antique mourning brooch was made sometime in the Victorian Era (1837-1901) and is in wonderful condition for it's age. The back is engraved with the initials: "M.L.N.", shown in photos.

Ornate jewelry was popularized during this time by the style icon, Queen Victoria, who went on to popularize elaborate mourning rituals and jewelry to remember loved ones. This type of piece would be made using the hair of a loved one and worn as a loving reminder of them. Queen Victoria herself wore black, including black mourning jewelry, everyday for the remaining 40 years after the death of her husband, Prince Albert. Here is a beautiful brooch and a history lesson!

  • Gold-filled & black enamel Victorian brooch
  • Contains human hair
  • C-clasp pin
  • Measures about 1 1/4" x 1 1/2"

All antique Lassoed Moon items are thoughtfully curated and carefully cleaned prior to your purchase. We try not to alter these pieces in any way, though some may be in need of repairs before they are listed. Any updates to the original construction will be noted in the description. Please review the images and listing carefully. Antique items are at least 100 years old and vary in condition. We will always do our best to accurately represent each item. Items are preowned and sold as is.

Antique jewelry care: Antique jewelry finishes and stones can become worn or tarnished over time. We recommend using a very gentle jewelry cleaner if you need to clean your pieces. Avoid exposing your jewelry to excess moisture, and do not wear while swimming or in the shower. If your antique piece has stones with sealed (covered by metal) or foiled backs, do not submerge it in jewelry cleaner. These items can be cleaned with a soft brush covered in natural jewelry cleaner or a natural acid like lemon juice.

*Please note: colors may vary slightly due to differences in monitor appearance.
