Antique | Gold and Black Victorian Mourning Hair Brooch
This gorgeous antique mourning brooch was made sometime in the Victorian Era (1837-1901) and is in wonderful condition for it's age. The back is engraved with the initials: "M.L.N.", shown in photos.
Ornate jewelry was popularized during this time by the style icon, Queen Victoria, who went on to popularize elaborate mourning rituals and jewelry to remember loved ones. This type of piece would be made using the hair of a loved one and worn as a loving reminder of them. Queen Victoria herself wore black, including black mourning jewelry, everyday for the remaining 40 years after the death of her husband, Prince Albert.
